📰 AI NEWS RECAP

Apple’s Secret Swiss AI Lab

Apple has quietly launched a major AI lab in Zurich—

Staffed by 36 former Google experts,

This lab is tasked with pushing the boundaries of AI.

Elite Team

With significant hires such as John Giannandrea and Yoshua Bengio, Apple is stacking its team with top AI talent, demonstrating a serious commitment to its AI strategy.

Beyond ChatGPT

The Zurich lab focuses on creating AI that understands and generates not just text but also visual content, pushing beyond current AI capabilities.

Practical Applications

This initiative is poised to revolutionize Apple’s ecosystem, enhancing everything from Siri to Apple Music, making AI a seamless part of user interactions across devices.

My Take

Apple’s approach to AI development has been markedly different from its peers.

While companies like OpenAI and Google have been public,

Apple has opted for a quieter, perhaps more strategic buildup.

Such as acquiring 30+ AI companies in the past year.

This could reflect a combination of being initially unprepared for the rapid advancements in AI…

Or Apple’s typical wait-to-perfect strategy.

Maybe a bit of both.

Either way.

AI’s capabilities are growing at an exponential rate.

The question remains…

Can Apple afford to continue playing behind closed doors?

Maybe we’ll find out in June at Apple’s WWDC.

Apple quietly announces OpenELM, a set of open-source language models ranging up to 3 billion parameters, optimized for smartphones.

Mystery surrounds the 'gpt2-chatbot', speculated to be an advanced GPT-5 test model due to its impressive but unconfirmed capabilities.

OpenAI rumored to launch its own search engine, aiming to transform information accessibility and compete directly with Google.

Google's Med-Gemini AI models, designed for medical applications, claim superior performance over GPT-4, showing potential in healthcare advancements.

Microsoft invested in OpenAI because of Google’s advancements in AI, revealed through internal communications involving top executives discussing the strategic necessity of the investment.

Microsoft announces a $1.7 billion investment in Indonesia to enhance cloud and AI infrastructure, aiming to transform the country into a global economic powerhouse and tech hub.

The New York Times has initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming copyright infringement for using its content without authorization to train AI models.

The Financial Times has secured a licensing deal with OpenAI, allowing the use of its content in AI developments, ensuring attribution and fostering innovations in AI-driven journalism.

Google has agreed to pay News Corp up to $6 million for AI content, marking a significant deal that highlights the evolving relationship between tech giants and media companies in the AI space.

🤿 AI DEEP DIVE

Watch NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, speak at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR).

He discusses the power of NVIDIA’s AI “chip” which is actually a 70-pound supercomputer worth $250,000 that consolidates an entire data center's capability.

NVIDIA’s total cost of ownership reduces costs significantly compared to competitors.

Where even if competitors’ chips are free, its not cheap enough to beat NVIDIA.

He also highlights its application in advancing DNA sequencing, allowing us to interact with genetic data as easily as using ChatGPT with PDFs.
