Are we moving TOO fast towards AGI?
This week saw significant announcements from OpenAI and Google, introducing new models with enhanced conversational abilities.
These developments have sparked intense debate about the speed of AI advancements and their safety implications.
Terminology and Definitions
Before we dive in, let’s align on who’s who and technical terminology.
Ilya Sutskever: Ilya Sutskever is a computer scientist and co-founder of OpenAI, known for his work in deep learning.
bJan Leike is an OpenAI researcher focused on AI safety and alignment with human values.
AI alignment: AI alignment ensures AI systems act according to human intentions and ethical principles.
AGI: AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, is AI that can perform any intellectual task like a human.
ASI: ASI, or Artificial Superintelligence, is AI that surpasses human intelligence in all areas.
'Her': "Her" is a sci-fi romantic drama starring Joaquin Phoenix about a man’s relationship with an AI operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
Overview of New AI Models Released This Week
OpenAI released GPT-4o which seamlessly handles images, text, video, and audio.
While Google announced Gemini Live with similar capabilities.
These models represent significant technological leaps…more important, you can talk with them like in the movie ‘Her’.
Implications for AI Safety
The accelerated development towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has raised safety concerns.
Many experts fear that we might be moving too fast without adequate safety measures in place.
Recent Resignations at OpenAI
Key figures at OpenAI, including Ilya Sutskever, have recently resigned, fueling speculation about internal disagreements over AI safety and the direction of AI development.
Another OpenAI lead scientist on AI safety and alignment, Jan Leike, resigned and gave up his stock compensation so that he could directly call out OpenAI on social media stating…
I joined because I thought OpenAI would be the best place in the world to do this research.
However, I have been disagreeing with OpenAI leadership about the company's core priorities for quite some time, until we finally reached a breaking point.

Community Reactions and Speculation
Online speculation suggests that OpenAI may have achieved AGI 18 months ago and is now working towards Artificial Superintelligence (ASI).
Leaks such as the Q* (QSTAR) model and cryptic tweets from Sam Altman have added to these rumors.
Observers note that the new GPT-4o model feels significantly more advanced, indicating a possible leap in AI capabilities.
Compute Needs and Financial Implications
It is speculated that OpenAI has been using AGI to plan a path towards achieving ASI.
Such as what models to create, and when and how to release them to gain public support and adoption.
Speculation includes that AGI has informed OpenAI that achieving ASI requires significantly more compute power.
This aligns with Sam Altman's public calls for a massive $7 trillion investment in global data centers, and him saying he’s willing to spend $50 billion per year to achieve AGI.
Disbanding the Superalignment Team
Further fueling speculation…
OpenAI has disbanded its Superalignment and Safety team.
Some speculate that’s because the team already solved alignment and could comfortably leave knowing there is a plan in place.
While others suggest a more dire alternative where OpenAI concluded that there is no feasible way to ensure superalignment with ASI and have decided to push forward nevertheless.
Winner Takes All Scenario
If OpenAI created AGI…then why hide it you wonder?
AGI represents a "winner takes all" scenario where the entity that successfully creates AGI first can leverage it to develop ASI, potentially gaining unparalleled technological and economic advantages.
My Take
The rapid advancements in AI are both exciting and concerning.
As we inch closer to AGI and potentially ASI, it's crucial to balance innovation with responsible safety measures.
Interestingly, even my interaction with AI tools, like this GPT-4o and Gemini, fuels my own speculation.
It feels as if these models are stepping stones to help humans gradually adapt to advanced AI capabilities, setting the stage for the adoption of more sophisticated technologies in the future.
So, what do you think?
Is AGI already upon on us? Or are we still years away?
