Claude Who? Claude 2!

As we continue to explore the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, we're turning our focus to a new player that has recently entered the field:

Claude 2, an AI chatbot developed by Anthropic.

But first, what is Anthropic?

Anthropic is an AI company that was founded in 2021 by Dario and Daniela Amodei who are former employees of OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT.

Their mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. This involves creating AI systems that can not only be capable of advanced tasks, but can be easily understood and controlled by humans, and that align with human values and intentions.

So, who is Claude 2, you ask?

Claude 2 is the new AI chatbot on the block, having been released just last month in July 2023.

Why should you care about Claude 2?

Well, while there have been several AI chatbots released since ChatGPT, Claude 2 is the first to truly challenge ChatGPT's dominance. Here's why:

🔑 Claude 2 is free. This is a significant advantage over ChatGPT-4, which comes with a $20/month price tag.

📚 Claude 2 can process more than ChatGPT. It allows users to import several documents, a feature only available to paid subscribers of ChatGPT’s Code Interpreter.

📅 Unlike the free version of ChatGPT, which is limited to data up to September 2021, Claude 2 has access to more recent information. However, it's not connected to the live internet, aligning with Anthropic’s mission of AI safety.

Claude 2 isn't without its limitations. Currently, it's only available in the US and UK, while ChatGPT is accessible in over 50 countries.

Interestingly, Claude 2's release coincided with a study from Stanford and Berkeley suggesting that “ChatGPT is getting dumber”.

The study identified a degradation in ChatGPT's accuracy over the last several months. While it's tempting to point fingers, we need to consider several factors:

1️⃣ ChatGPT's architecture: With 96 layers, it's a complex beast. Perhaps in an attempt to keep up with the competition, ChatGPT may have prematurely launched new features like web browsing and "plugins".

2️⃣ The human factor: ChatGPT relies on user feedback, which varies greatly in quality. The 'GIGO' (Garbage In, Garbage Out) principle might be at play here.

3️⃣ Potential sabotage: As AI competition heats up, could competitors be using bots to exploit the feedback process, thereby degrading ChatGPT's quality?
