Rise Of The Machines

AI Overlords Or Man's Best Friend?

What’s going on this week in AI news? AI robots are taking over by land, sea, and air!

As AI continues to spread its wings (and fins, and legs), we've witnessed a drone that's faster than humans, a swimming robot that mimics nature's most elegant sea creatures, and a robotic dog that tries to outsmart humans in a game of tag.

Are these advancements ushering in an era of collaborative coexistence between humans and AI? Or, as movies have warned us time and again, are we setting ourselves up for our own extinction?

AI Robots By Land…The Good

UC Berkeley researchers have unveiled AI robots that excel in the dynamic game of tag. Using a novel strategy called "privileged learning," these robots make strategic decisions in real-time. Tested on a four-legged robot, it displayed learned behaviors, successfully tagging humans and other robots.

Instead of merely following, they can predict moves, cut corners, and actively seek their target. This breakthrough has potential applications beyond games, like disaster relief. Will these four-legged robots be man’s new best friend?

And The Bad…

"Black Mirror" is a dystopian anthology series exploring the dark and unexpected consequences of modern technology.

In Season 4, Episode 5, "Metalhead", a woman is relentlessly pursued by robotic guard dogs after a scavenging mission goes awry, showcasing a bleak future where machines turn against humanity.

AI Robots By Sea…The Good

Pliant Energy's Velox robot uses unique undulating fins to navigate both land and water. These wave-shaped fins, packed with elastic energy, enable the robot to swim, crawl, and adapt to various terrains.

The robot's versatility emphasizes its amphibious capabilities, resistance to entanglement, and potential applications ranging from coral reef inspection to ice-rescue missions. It can operate autonomously or by remote control.

AI Robots By Sea…The Bad

"The Matrix" is a sci-fi classic where humans are trapped in a simulated reality by machines. Sentinels, squid-like robotic enforcers, while not quite underwater, patrol the post-apocalyptic real world, hunting down and exterminating any humans who resist the Matrix, emphasizing the machines' dominance over humanity.

AI Robots By Air

An AI-powered quadcopter, named Swift, has surpassed human champions in drone racing. Swift uses a combination of simulation training, onboard sensors, and computation to navigate race tracks. It determines the fastest route through gates and adapts to real-world challenges like air turbulence.

This marks a significant milestone as AI demonstrates its capability to excel in real-world physical competitions, not just board games or virtual challenges.

And The Bad…

“Slaughterbots” is a short film set in a dystopian world where a new form of AI weaponry has emerged. Drone bots operate based on profiles, targeting individuals based on age, gender, and ethnicity.

The traditional concept of nuclear warfare becomes obsolete, as these bots offer a virtually risk-free way to eliminate enemies. Simply characterize the target, release the swarm of bots, and watch as they execute their mission.
