Did OpenAI Really Use ScarJo’s Voice?
This week saw significant announcements from OpenAI and Google, introducing new models with enhanced conversational abilities.
Scarlett Johansson accused OpenAI of recreating her voice from "Her" as ChatGPT's flirty "Sky" persona.
But new details suggest Sky's unsettling resemblance may have been unintentional.
Key points from OpenAI:
✅ Sky's voice actress was hired before outreach to Johansson
✅ Actress confirms her natural speaking voice matches Sky's
✅ "Her" film and Johansson were never mentioned in casting process
However, OpenAI's actions like CEO Sam Altman's cryptic "her" tweet raised suspicions of intentional imitation.
As the dust settles, key questions remain - was this a colossal ethical misstep or an unfortunate lookalike?
My Take
Regardless of intent, this incident exposes AI's double-edged sword of unprecedented creativity coupled with uncharted IP conflicts.
Proactive, nuanced policies balancing innovation with creator protections are vital as generative AI's potential explosively expands.
I personally don’t think ‘Sky’ sounded like ScarJo but can see how people can think that.
So, what do you think?
