Should AI Have Freedom?

Why AI Needs A Rulebook NOW!

AI is everywhere. It's in your phone, your car, and even your fridge. But have you ever stopped to think who's making sure it's doing more good than harm?

The truth is, AI is a double-edged sword. Sure, it can help doctors diagnose diseases faster, but it can also be used to hack into your bank account.

It's not just about whether AI will change our lives—that's already happening.

The real deal is: how do we make sure this change is for the better?

This week, we're diving into the messy world of AI rules and regulations. We're talking about everything from protecting your creative work to stopping the spread of harmful content online.

We'll look at the big questions that everyone from lawmakers to everyday people like you and me need to think about.

Why should you care?

Because without rules, AI can be used for all sorts of shady stuff.

Imagine drones that are supposed to deliver packages being used for spying instead. Or think about AI systems that could corrupt our power grids and financial markets.

Scary, right?

Bottom line: We need a rulebook for AI.

And not just any rulebook—a solid one that helps us use AI in a way that's safe, fair, and good for everyone.

Don't miss out on this urgent discussion. It's time to get informed and take action.

Artificial intelligence is now being weaponized by scammers to clone voices, making phone scams alarmingly convincing. This new trend has contributed to Americans losing nearly $9 billion to fraud last year, a staggering increase of over 150% in just two years.

The emotional toll is equally devastating; for instance, a mother was tricked into believing her daughter was in danger due to a cloned voice.

Experts recommend adopting a "code word" system and setting social media accounts to private as preventive measures.

Big news from Capitol Hill! Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently convened a closed-door meeting with tech giants like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Bill Gates to discuss the future of AI regulation.

🤝 Bipartisan AI Policy: Schumer aims to build a bipartisan AI policy that Congress can pass. The meeting was a first step in gathering insights from industry leaders to shape meaningful regulation.

🚨 Existential Risks: Elon Musk and other tech leaders raised concerns about the existential risks posed by AI. There's a strong consensus that some form of regulation is needed.

Independent Assessments: The meeting revealed broad support for independent assessments of AI systems to ensure AI safety and ethics.

📜 Licensing Approach: There's a divide in the tech industry about how to regulate AI. While some favor a licensing approach, others, like IBM, prefer rules that govern specific risky uses of AI.

🌐 Global Implications: The EU has already set comprehensive rules for AI. The U.S. is now playing catch-up but aims to act without stifling innovation.

🤔 Why This Matters: AI is not just a tech issue; it's a societal issue. From data privacy to job displacement, the stakes are high. We need guardrails to ensure AI develops "on the positive side," as Sen. Mike Rounds puts it.

Do you think AI should be regulated? What safeguards would you like to see in place?

The rise of biometric security in 2023 has led to concerns about its vulnerabilities. While biometric systems offer a higher level of security compared to traditional methods, they are not foolproof.

Hackers are finding ways to use AI to bypass these systems, raising questions about the efficacy and safety of using biometrics for securing sensitive information like bank accounts.

Earlier this year the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing on AI regulation, industry leaders and lawmakers explored the future of AI.

Here's what you missed:

1️⃣ AI's Double-Edged Sword: Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) emphasized the potential of AI to both revolutionize and disrupt society. He highlighted the risks of algorithmic bias, disinformation, and the potential for job displacement. He urged for sensible safeguards to ensure innovation doesn't compromise public trust.

2️⃣ AI: A Technological Revolution: Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) compared the rise of AI to the invention of the internet and the printing press, emphasizing its potential to be one of the most significant technological innovations in human history. However, he also warned of the potential severe consequences if not handled responsibly.

3️⃣ Precision Regulation Approach: Christina Montgomery, IBM’s Vice President and Chief Privacy and Trust Officer, advocated for a precision regulation approach to AI. This approach would establish rules to govern the deployment of AI in specific use cases, rather than regulating the technology itself.

4️⃣ AI's Potential Threat to Democracy: Gary Marcus, a leading voice in artificial intelligence, warned that AI could create persuasive lies at a scale humanity has never seen before, potentially threatening democracy. He also highlighted the inherent unreliability of current systems.

The hearing was a significant step towards understanding the potential impacts of AI on society and the need for effective regulation, not in the US, but globally.

George R.R. Martin, along with other renowned authors like Jonathan Franzen and John Grisham, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for copyright infringement.

The authors allege that OpenAI used their copyrighted works to train its language models without permission.

The lawsuit aims to classify the filing as a class action and argues that such practices endanger the livelihoods of fiction writers by allowing the generation of text that mimics or summarizes their works.

OpenAI is making waves with its new grant program aimed at crowdsourcing AI regulation.

The program will award $100,000 each to 10 projects that propose innovative ways to regulate artificial general intelligence (AGI).

This initiative is a significant step towards democratizing AI governance and encouraging diverse perspectives in the field.

Comedian and author Sarah Silverman, is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement.

The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI's ChatGPT and Meta's LLaMA were trained on datasets containing their copyrighted works acquired from "shadow library" websites.

The authors are seeking statutory damages, restitution of profits, and more, claiming that they did not consent to the use of their copyrighted books as training material for the companies' AI models.

In a unified statement, CEOs of the world's leading AI companies and AI experts have released an open letter highlighting the existential risks AI poses to humanity, on par with pandemics and nuclear war.

The signatories include AI heavyweights like Sam Altman of OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, and Elon Musk.

As governments and organizations worldwide grapple with the need for AI regulation, this letter serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of the issue. Discover more about this critical issue here:
